The domestic Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC-D) is the short form of the EIC, used where one contractor has designed, constructed, and inspected and tested the same piece of domestic electrical work — a new circuit, a consumer unit change, a full or partial rewire. Where the full EIC carries three separate signatory blocks for Design, Construction and Inspection & Testing because those roles can sit with different people, the domestic short form has a single signatory block because, on the great majority of domestic jobs, one contractor holds all three roles. It is not a lesser certificate — it certifies the same new work to the same standard, in a form matched to how domestic work is actually carried out.
Like the full EIC, it is not a certificate that reports on the condition of existing wiring — that is an EICR. An EIC-D says: this new work was designed, built, inspected and tested, and it complies with BS 7671.
Any time domestic electrical work includes a new circuit — a rewire, a new circuit to a kitchen extension, a consumer unit replacement with new circuits — it needs an EIC or EIC-D, not a Minor Works Certificate. Minor Works is for additions and alterations that do not extend to a new circuit — adding a socket to an existing circuit, for example. See Minor Works if that is the closer fit for the job.
NexCert issues the domestic EIC-D alongside the full EIC, EICR (domestic and commercial), Minor Works and the Domestic Visual Condition Report, from the same workspace. The engineer completes the certificate on a phone or tablet, on site, with the form working offline and resuming when signal returns. Because a sole trader signing their own domestic work is their own supervisor, there is no separate sign-off step in the way — the certificate is completed and issued from the same visit, and the finished record is delivered with an evidence trail of what was tested and when.
There are fields for your own NICEIC, NAPIT, SELECT or Gas Safe registration number, at both company and individual engineer level, on every certificate NexCert issues.
The domestic EIC-D is one of six electrical certificate types NexCert ships under BS 7671:2018+A4:2026: EIC (full form), EIC-D (domestic short form), EICR domestic, EICR commercial, Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate, and the Domestic Visual Condition Report. If different people held the design, construction and inspection roles on the job, the full EIC is the correct form instead.
/ FAQ
No. It certifies the same new work to the same BS 7671 requirements. The difference is the signatory structure — one block instead of three — matched to the common case of one contractor carrying out the whole job.
The short form is built for the domestic case of one contractor holding all three roles. For commercial work, or wherever design, construction and inspection are genuinely split between people, the full EIC is the right form.
No — if the job includes a new circuit, the EIC-D covers it. A separate Minor Works Certificate is for work that does not extend to a new circuit.
