CP17 commercial gas installation safety report software

A CP17 is the commercial gas installation safety report under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, and it includes tightness testing and purging. NexCert lets Gas Safe engineers complete it on a phone or tablet on site and deliver it with an audit trail.

What a CP17 is

CP17 is the trade name for a Commercial Gas Installation Safety Report under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 (GSIUR) — the record for gas work on commercial premises rather than domestic dwellings. It covers the same underlying duty as a CP12 (checking that gas installations are safe) but for a commercial installation.

Tightness testing and purging

Tightness testing checks the gas installation for leaks before it's put into or returned to use; purging clears air or gas from pipework as part of bringing an installation into service safely. Both are part of what a CP17 records for a commercial installation.

A relevant standards change: IGEM/UP/1B Edition 4, covering tightness testing and direct purging of smaller natural gas and LPG installations, was published 25 March 2026. Edition 3 remains acceptable until 30 September 2026; Edition 4 becomes mandatory from 1 October 2026, replacing the previous meter-size-based pressure-drop test with a new Installation Volume measure for installations up to 0.035 m³. Gas Safe Register has indicated it will not defect businesses still adapting during the transition window. This is current public standards information (IGEM), not a claim about NexCert's own templates.

The specifics of tightness testing and purging on a given installation, and which edition of IGEM/UP/1B applies to it, are matters for the attending Gas Safe registered engineer, not something this page can determine for a specific site.

How NexCert issues a CP17

NexCert issues the CP17 (Commercial Gas Installation Safety Report) alongside the other four gas certificate types it ships under GSIUR 1998: CP12 (landlord gas safety record), CP14 (Warning/Advice Notice), CP2 (domestic gas service record) and CP42 (commercial catering gas safety certificate). The engineer completes the report on a phone or tablet on site, offline if needed, and the finished record is delivered with an evidence trail — useful for a commercial client, managing agent or compliance review asking for proof a check happened and what it found.

There are fields for your own Gas Safe registration number, at both company and individual engineer level, on every certificate NexCert issues.

If the visit finds a fault

Where a CP17 visit finds an installation Immediately Dangerous or At Risk, that's recorded on a CP14 Warning/Advice Notice rather than on the CP17 itself — see CP14 software for the gas Warning/Advice Notice. NexCert issues CP14 from the same workspace, so a CP17 visit that turns up a fault doesn't need a separate tool.

Commercial catering installations

Commercial catering gas — kitchens, catering equipment, interlock systems — is a distinct certificate in its own right. See CP42 software for the commercial catering gas safety certificate rather than using a CP17 for catering-specific work.

/ FAQ

Common questions

What's the difference between a CP12 and a CP17?

Both check that gas installations are safe under GSIUR 1998. CP12 is for domestic, landlord-let property. CP17 is for commercial premises and includes tightness testing and purging as part of the check.

When does IGEM/UP/1B Edition 4 become mandatory?

Edition 3 remains acceptable until 30 September 2026; Edition 4 is mandatory from 1 October 2026.

Is CP17 the same as commercial gas safety certificate?

Yes — "CP17" and "commercial gas safety certificate" or "commercial gas installation safety report" all refer to the same document in ordinary trade use.
