What a CP42 is

CP42 is the trade name for a Commercial Catering Gas Safety Certificate, issued under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 (GSIUR) and BS 6173, the British Standard for commercial catering gas installations. It covers gas appliances and installations in commercial kitchens — restaurants, catering units, canteens — which have their own standard because of the scale and layout of catering equipment and, on newer installations, the ventilation interlock systems involved.

The interlock check on new installs

On new catering gas installations, BS 6173 covers ventilation interlock systems — arrangements that link the gas supply to the kitchen's ventilation, so gas appliances can't operate without adequate ventilation running. Where an installation has an interlock system, checking it forms part of the safety check recorded on a CP42.

Whether a specific catering installation requires an interlock system, and whether an existing one meets current requirements, is a matter for the attending Gas Safe registered engineer working to BS 6173, not something this page can determine for a specific kitchen.

How CP42 differs from CP17

Both CP17 and CP42 cover commercial gas installations under GSIUR 1998, but CP42 is specific to catering: commercial kitchens, catering equipment and the ventilation interlock checks BS 6173 covers. A commercial installation that isn't a catering kitchen — an office, a warehouse, a commercial boiler plant — is a CP17, not a CP42. See CP17 software for the commercial gas installation safety report for that broader commercial certificate.

How NexCert issues a CP42

NexCert issues the CP42 (Commercial Catering Gas Safety Certificate) alongside the other four gas certificate types it ships under GSIUR 1998: CP12 (landlord gas safety record), CP14 (Warning/Advice Notice), CP2 (domestic gas service record) and CP17 (commercial gas installation safety report). The engineer completes the certificate on a phone or tablet on site, and the finished record is delivered with an evidence trail to the commercial client or managing agent.

There are fields for your own Gas Safe registration number, at both company and individual engineer level, on every certificate NexCert issues.

If the visit finds a fault

Where a CP42 visit finds an installation Immediately Dangerous or At Risk, that's recorded on a CP14 Warning/Advice Notice rather than on the CP42 itself — see CP14 software for the gas Warning/Advice Notice.

/ FAQ

Common questions

What's the difference between a CP17 and a CP42?

Both cover commercial gas installations under GSIUR 1998. CP17 is the general commercial gas installation safety report. CP42 is specific to commercial catering — kitchens and catering equipment — and follows BS 6173, including the ventilation interlock check on new installs.

Does every catering gas installation need an interlock check?

Where an installation has a ventilation interlock system, checking it is part of the CP42. Whether a specific installation requires one under BS 6173 is a question for the attending engineer, not something this page can answer for a specific kitchen.
